Guild Hunter Series - Reviews

A dark new world where lethal, beautiful archangels hold sway over immortals and mortals both, with the Guild Hunters caught in between, tasked with retrieving those vampires who break contracts with their angelic masters.

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she's the best—but she doesn't know if she's good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, only one thing is clear—failure is not an option...even if the task is impossible.

Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other…and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt doesn't destroy her, succumbing to Raphael's seductive touch just may. For when archangels play, mortals break…

What a different take on Vampires Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh was. Elena is a Vampire Hunter, but she doesn't dust them with a stake, she tracks and rounds them up and returns them to their masters the Angels. Weird huh? Angel's making the vampires after they petition to be made, i love that different aspect to it.
This is the first book in the Guild Hunter series and these aren't ordinary cloud jumping Angel's we've all come to know, firstly there isn't a harp in sight! secondly, some are kind of the bad guys! Raphael isn't your typical Hero of the story, he's in a word Dark. Very dark and cold, so remote i wondered how he could be the hero, but soon as he met Elena these two in charge characters have sparks and i finally saw him.

And i liked!

Hired by Raphael, king pin Angel of New York Elena has to track down a rogue Angel and stop his killing spree, she's quite a ballsy character, she doesn't follow orders well, she knows more than likely Raphael is gonna kill her ass dead.

"You don't fear me" he said now.
She wasn't stupid enough to lie. "I'm petrified. But i figure you didn't make me come all this way just so you could push me off the roof"

In all honesty i was more interested in reading about Raphael then i was in Elena for most of the book, i'm glad she wasn't a simpering idiot and that she was a Hunter, able to do for herself not rely on being rescued, those girl characters make me want to claw my eyes out and make eyeball stew! And she had a quick mouth for come backs, but at one point she was on the run from Raphael (and her feelings) and we see an even darker colder side to Raphael which is the catalyst to the change for them both it just felt it took a 180 turn from the flirty flirty then oh on the run from the Angel. It soon got back on track though.  There was parts of the book, things from the past, that didn't really go anywhere, but as a growing series i'm sure those issues will be explored more as it progresses.

I liked them together, i would have liked a bit more sizzle between them, it seemed it was all argue argue run run argue flirt bicker snarl flirt get out of my head snarl argue then hip bumpage! (albeit sexy hip bumpage! the Archangel has a wickedly delicious durty mouth!)

While i'm talking of hip bumpage, i have to say. I want to taste Angel's Dust! APHRODISIAC!! Although i so could see myself addicted to it, sucking feathers is so not an attractive quality :P

I'd never read Nalini Singh books before, i bought for the first two Guild Hunter's and the first two Psy-changling boks together, so im happily pleased i really liked Angel's Blood. It's a fast paced Urban Fantasy story, that has enough good versus evil, vampires, fighting, sexy time, and great secondary characters (Illium and Dimitri) to keep you hooked page after page.

"I can smell blood, Elena,” Dmitri drawled, walking back into the room. “Are you trying to flirt?"

I give Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh 4 out of 5 Sparkles - Angel Dust-tastic Read!

They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena…

Archangels Kiss by Nalini Singh carries on right from when Angel's Blood left off, i wont give spoilers for those who haven't read it yet, (i even cut the synopsis in half so it didn't spoil)  but it deals with a change for Elena, and alot of big bads out for her blood namely Archangels. While i didn't love it as much as Angel's Blood and i'll get to that in a moment, i did like the developing relationship with Raphael and Elena, it's not all sweetness and light, he's still this cold dark immortal, he just happens to love the vampire hunter too, while love does make his emotions more human he hasn't lost the aspect of him that i liked, some books soon as the guy falls in love he changes into a softy wimp, all love hearts and roses, Raphael still is who we first met, he just has layers of him now. All sexy layers!

Elena on the other hand irritated me some what, this recurring thing from her past just kept coming up again and again it felt like every other page (it wasn't)  it was Elena remembering this thing from her childhood when her family was killed, she has nightmares about it, and Raphael deals with those nightmares once she's awake...and actually, it's a bad thing for me to be reading a book and it having resonate another series, every time those past incidents happened i couldn't help but think of Eve and Roarke from J D Robb's In Death series. So for that reason Elena didn't appeal to me as much. Not until she was in scene with members of the 7, Raphael's vampire servants. I LOVED them all individually for different reasons, I think Dimitri and Venom are second favourites but it's Illium aka "Bluebell" because of his blue wings, who is my number one favourite, i see such chemistry there between him and Elena, not sure if it's sexual, or he is just teasing her, he certainly does make Raphael's jealousy show, so i'm hoping he is prominent in future books.

The plot in comparison to Angel's Blood is slower but nonetheless enjoyable, i found the many many Archangel's names tossed into the plot confusing at times, but the world Singh has built is so exciting, it turns Angels and Vampires that we've always known of clean on its head and gives you something completely new. Much more character based we see more of the seven, and what you can expect with all of Singh's characters is just when you think you know them, she flips it and shows you another side, case in point Michaela who is a member of the Cadre Ten, another Archangel who hates Elena, she isn't at all a character you could like until children start to go missing and get hurt then you see a different side, a more humane side to this woman that makes you think she does have a heart after all. The mark of a good villain in my opinion is one you can hate and feel sorry for at the same time.

Overall this is a series i am looking forward to reading more of, getting to know the characters and world more and if Raphael happens to be letting that seductive Angel Dust of his flutter around i 'aint gonna be complaining and i'm hoping with giant sweet scented candy twirls that we see more of Illium!

A quote i just loved:

"They didn't understand that she held his heart, held it so utterly that there was nothing he wouldn't do, no line he wouldn;t cross to keep her safe"  - Raphael

I just love him! and it's not a bad thing he does the growly "Mine" line either. RAWR!

I give Archangel's Kiss 3.5 out of 5 Sparkles. Angelicious read!

There's no confirmed date for the third Guild Hunter instalment sometime around Feb/March of 2011 FOREVERS Away! for author and release dates go HERE

I *heart* Nalini Singh. Her Psy/Changling series is AMAZING - I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. I also really enjoy the Guild Hunter series, but p/c is better (in my opinion). Ms. Singh has a talent for writing sensual stories!
