**Summary taken from Author Website***In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.
Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.
Firstly i should say please excuse my extreme ramble review, i'm still on my Lover Mine high and have thoughts and emotions zipping all over, It's not going to be professional in ANY sense, not even in the same comparison as some of the other bloggers reviews...so if you can keep up, hold on tight! lol
**Possible Spoilers** please turn back now if you haven’t read it. Just know it is rated the highest I can give!
**Definiate Gushing** Turn back now if you’re at all queasy at over dramatic gushing and swooning.
You were warned! =D
What can i say about the most highly anticipated book of the entire year...but FANTASTIC! I don't usually give my overall verdict until the end but i have to say John Matthew and Xhex's book is made of pure awesome! No, that's too tame...It's made of awesome, wrapped in fantastic and boxed up in Wonderful!
Did I mention I loved it? What a ride J R Ward took us on. We waited a whole year for Lover Mine, and in that time many hundreds of speculations have been talked about, how would she deal with John’s past, would he get back that good relationship he had with Tohr and the other brothers, could she make it a believable romance with the tough fierce Xhex, would there be much of any romance in Lover Mine at all, how would Qhuay progress. All valid questions any BDB addict was asking themselves, After the last couple of books I don’t mind admitting I was doubtful that Lover Mine would be in the league of Dark Lover or Lover Awakened….but holy crap Ward blew all my doubts clear out of the water and gave me the very best Black Dagger Brotherhood book. EVAH!
He'd wanted to be owned. He'd wanted someone to say, You're mine.
Here was this warrior, who we first met as a scrawny scared boy who you just wanted to hug and mother him and now he was a huge transitioned male, in love with someone who he thinks doesn’t love him back, still screwed up over his past, screwed up more about his present and to cap it all off his sworn enemy has kidnapped his love. John Matthew was SO intense in his focus to find Xhex and when he did find her but couldn’t see her due to the spell Lash *hiss* had cast, his pain and hers came clear off the page.
What I feared for Xhex was, she was so hard, so cold in some respects that I wondered how Ward could make her into a heroine of substance for me to really like her, she would either have to stay as tough as she was and not be really appealing, or like some authors do they pussify their chicks and make me not like them at all, but wow as her story unfolded I liked her more and more, her steely determination not to be Lash’s *hiss* victim despite the torture he’d done to her, she showed vulnerability but kept that core essence that was just her, not willing to lay down and accept defeat. I loved that about her. And when it came down to it, her love for John was more important that getting her revenge. Their love, despite John not talking transgressed beyond that making it into such a wonderfully sweet, deep heart filled love story. And their love scenes are gonna melt your eyeballs clean out. Guaranteed!
Other points in the book to mention:
Tohr and John finally getting back on good ground with each other, I cried hard when they did, their father son bonding moment, was so heart warming.
Seeing more of Payne unfolding, it was enough to intrigue me to her book which is next. And surprisingly there was no next book build up, Only one mention of Manny, so I can’t even say I will like him yet or want to get to know him more. Payne’s “Brother Mine” scene, so nice!
Qhuay. Oh gawds Qhuay, I feel like bawling just thinking of what’s going to happen next. Knowing Ward’s style, I figured we wouldn’t get the happy happy conclusion with them just yet, but holy crap i didn’t think we’d have the heart wrenching scenes that we did get. My heart broke more as each chapter went by with Blay and Qhuinn, I wanted Qhuinn to stop being so damn stupid. I am optimistic for them both for future books, but damn it’s gonna be a tough ride. Get it together Qhuinn and Blay!
Lash *hiss* Ugh…has there ever been a baddie I hated more? I don’t know, but I do know I hate that guy! What happened to him, his progression as the Omega’s son was just in a word, YACK! There’s no redeemable qualities about him, even when he was a transitioned vampire I hated him, but sometimes authors can turn that around, make you like a previously hated character, Not with him, no way no how. It’s a testament to Ward’s writing that she has a character so vehemently hated. Now it’s all change in the Lesser Society, so that will be interesting to read in the next book.
Ok, so I have to mention the elephant in the room.. The Ghost Hunter section of Lover Mine. WTF?! It was kinda lame, and I found myself less engaged through those parts, wanting to just skip and get back to the real story, but I stuck with it and yeah it did have it’s conclusion, its ahhh moment…I’m just not sure why it came in that guise and not something…better? Anyway, it gave us Murhder, and I for one CANNOT wait to see more of that brother. More brothers to go around, never a bad thing!
One of the most emotional reads I’ve had in a long time, I literally cried through the last 100 pages, good tears, sad tears, good tears again…and then just when I’m all gushy inside we get that O.M.G at the end. DID.NOT.SEE.THAT.COMING! C’mon people, did you see it coming?!?!
All I’m saying is now I’m more confident who is Tohr’s second HEA.
And the whole Darius POV tied in so nicely at the end, making John Matthew and Xhex fated. I loved that.
Some favourite quotes of the book:
“I miss you. I miss you so fucking bad it hurts, but I don't know how to find you even though you're right in front of me”
“I would hold you up. I will ever hold you up and
hold you dear, lover mine.”
“He was halfway to the top when Hollywood's voice sounded out. "Oh,
man, I want mine done over with some of that curlicue crap." (in between all my tears Rhage gave me a giggle with that quote)
And my favourite Lover Mine quote..
“Come to me, he signed. Come down to me, my female.”
For people who haven’t read the BDB series (WHAT?! These people actually exist?!) Lover Mine is a great read, but you wont have that attachment to the characters you need to really understand its emotion. But for fans of the BDB this is a must MUST read, if you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for?!
Did you stick with me through my gush fest? HA! I told you it wouldn’t be anything eloquent or professional like some of the blogger reviews.
I give Lover Mine by J R Ward my highest rating. 10 giant Sparkles. An “if you never read anything else this year READ THIS BOOK” rating.
