"For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever."
I'd really looked forward to reading this book since i saw all the chatter about it on Twitter, damn that place for book pimpage! hee! And i have to say i wasn't disappointed at all. For a YA book it is sweet and cute and a little edgy in places, and i just adored Grace and Sam. Their relationship right from them meeting when he was a human was just lovely, it didn't feel weird that they were instantly in love since they'd watched each other for years with him in wolf form.
I liked the different premise of werewolves to anything i've ever read before, that each cold season Sam and the other pack members turned back into a wolf until it became warmer weather until one day they just don't return to being human again. I felt Sam's distress of not wanting to be a wolf and leaving Grace and Grace's anguish of waiting to lose the guy she loved.
The story was held up well with secondary characters, but it wasn't Grace's best friends Rachel and Olivia i liked best, but Isabel the snootish girl from school, i'd like to see more of her in future books.
Grace's parents were in a word flaky and for me added nothing to the story, im sure if my daughter had a boy staying in her room for weeks i'd know about it, but they didnt.
If i had to pick fault at all, and im really digging because i loved the book, it would be the total acceptance of everyone that if you got bitten by a wolf you became one, of course that would be my first thought....eeks im bitten im gonna grow paws and have to shave my hairy back! But then unlike the characters who used their brains to figure out this wolf problem id be a screaming wreck :P lol
Loving the flow of this story i eagerly await the next "Linger" to see these characters again.
I give Shiver 4 and half sparklies out of 5!
